D365 licencing made simple
Continue readingMicrosoft lays out the licencing for Dynamics 365 in a labyrinthine 191-page document and several supplementary documents. By analysing and cross-referencing these various documents we are able to provide an accessible summary of available licencing options.

There are two editions of Dynamics 365: the Business Edition aimed at SMBs and the Enterprise Edition for larger organisations.
Dynamics 365 Business Edition
Purchased on a per user monthly subscription.
- There are two types of user subscription: Full user and Team Member. Full Users can access all functionality. Team Members have full read and approval rights, but limited editing rights.
Apps can be purchased separately or together in a plan.
- The plan offers tiered discounts for volume Full User subscriptions.
Unlimited file and database storage.
Only available as a cloud-hosted (SaaS) service.
- Only through an authorised Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP).
Dynamics 365 Enterprise Edition
Purchased on a per user monthly subscription.
- There are three types of user subscription: Full User, Team Member and Device. Full Users can access all functionality. Team Members have full read rights and some approval and editing rights.
Apps can be purchased separately or together in a plan.
- Plan 1 includes all CRM apps and Power Apps.
- Plan 2 includes all Plan 1 apps plus Operations (Microsoft Dynamics AX).
The plans offer tiered discounts for volume Full User and Team Member subscriptions.
- Full User volume discounts only for Plan 1.
- Plan 2 Full Users count towards Plan 1 discount.
- There is a 20 Full User minimum for Operations/Plan 2.
Available as a cloud-hosted (SaaS) service, on premises and hybrid.
Available through the following programs:
- Authorised Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) – minimum 1 user/1 year.
- Enterprise Agreement (EA) – minimum 500 users/3 years.
- Microsoft Products and Services Agreement (MPSA) – minimum 250 users/1 year.
- Microsoft Online Services (MOSP), only Plan 1/Plan 1 apps – minimum 1 user/1 year.
Existing customers
For current Dynamics CRM and Dynamics AX customers there are several transition paths to Dynamics 365.
- Current on premises Dynamics AX support continued. No action is necessary. Can transition to Dynamics 365 using “Cloud Add-on” or “From SA” options.
- Current on premises Dynamics CRM need to transition to Dynamics 365 at renewal.
- Current online Dynamics AX and CRM need to transition to Dynamics 365at renewal.
- Transition discounts available for current on premises Dynamics customers. Dynamics CRM transition discounts range from 40%-65%. Dynamics AXtransition discount of 40%.
Current on premises Dynamics AX users mapped to Dynamics 365 as follows:
- Enterprise or Functional > D365 Enterprise Edition, Plan 2
- Task or Self Serve > D365 for Team Members
- Task Device > D365 for Operations Device
Special offers
- Various discounts are available for government, academic, and charity sectors.
- Switch Save promotion until end of June 2017 for Salesforce, SAP or Oracle clients – switch to D365 Enterprise Edition Plan 1 or Plan 2 and receive 20% discount (Enterprise Agreements/Subscription).
- Enterprise Edition for SMBs. For a limited time (until Business Edition apps are available), new SMB customers can purchase Enterprise Edition Sales and Customer Service apps on discounted subscriptions.
